これからどうするのかと尋ねるワトソンに、ホームズは探索はほぼ終わったと答える。明日、国王とともにブライオニー荘を訪ね、居間で彼女を待つあいだに写真を取り戻すつもりだという。訪問は朝の八時。結婚で彼女の暮らしが変わる前に動かねばならず、ホームズは国王への電報を急ぐ。
