午後の列車が田舎町ロスに着き、ホームズとワトソンはホームで待つ捜査官と落ち合う。向かうのは、部屋が用意された町の宿だ。お茶の席でレストレードは現場へ行く馬車の手配を伝えるが、ホームズはそれとは少し違うことを気にかけている。

It was nearly four o'clock when we at last, after passing through the beautiful Stroud Valley, and over the broad gleaming Severn, found ourselves at the pretty little country-town of Ross.美しいストラウド谷を抜け、広くきらめくセヴァン川を渡って、ようやくロスという美しい小さな田舎町に着いたときには、四時近くになっていた。
A lean, ferret-like man, furtive and sly-looking, was waiting for us upon the platform.やせた、フェレットのような男が、こそこそした、ずるそうな様子でホームに待っていた。

Lestrade looked startled.レストレードは面食らった様子だった。
"I do not quite follow," he said.「どうも話が分からない」と彼は言った。
