宿のソファに落ち着いたホームズは、外へ出るかどうかを気圧計と空の様子から考えている。レストレードは事件の見通しと、自分に調査を頼んだ女性について話す。男たちがお茶を囲む部屋へ、一台の馬車が到着し、新たな来訪者が現れる。
