ホームズは別の足跡を見つけ、マントのために戻った動きを読み取り、林の中へ追う。大きなブナの木の下でちりのようなものと石を集め、道路へ出るまで跡をたどる。
表現・文法のポイント
- sometimes losing, sometimes finding the track
- losingとfindingを並べて、跡を見失うときもあれば見つけるときもある、という繰り返しを表す。一本道を迷わず進んだのではない。ホームズは行きつ戻りつしながら、地面の手掛かりをつないでいる。
- not only the ground but even the bark
- not only A but Bは「AだけでなくBも」。evenが、木の樹皮まで調べたという範囲の広さを強める。ホームズは地面のものを拾うだけでなく、手が届く高さまで、拡大鏡で細かく調べている。
