ホームズの説明を聞いたワトソンは、捜査の行く先が見えた気がして、その考えを口にしようとする。そこへ給仕が居間の戸を開け、一人の来客を案内する。二人の会話はひとまず中断し、ホームズは新たな客を迎え、座るように勧める。

"Holmes," I said, "you have drawn a net round this man from which he cannot escape, and you have saved an innocent human life as truly as if you had cut the cord which was hanging him.「ホームズ」と私は言った。「きみは、この男が逃れられない網を周りに張り巡らせた。それに、首をつる縄を切ってやったのと同じように、間違いなく無実の人の命を救ったのだね。
