二晩後の深夜、ハンター嬢は寝室の窓から庭を見下ろす。月明かりの芝生を、大きな黒い影がゆっくり動いている。昼間に聞いた警告が冗談ではなかったと知り、彼女は夜の庭と、その見張り役に近づかないよう心に決める。

"The warning was no idle one, for two nights later I happened to look out of my bedroom window about two o'clock in the morning.「その警告は、決して大げさなものではありませんでした。二日後の夜、たまたま午前二時ごろ寝室の窓から外を見たのです。
