廊下の奥には、板でふさがれた古い扉がある。ホームズたちは力を合わせて開け、中へ入るが、探していた人物の姿はない。小さな家具だけが残る部屋で、ホームズは天井の天窓と、その周りに残された手掛かりへ目を向ける。
