天窓を見たルーカッスルは、突然あることに気づき、部屋を飛び出して階下へ向かう。ハンター嬢は男の行き先を察し、ワトソンは護身用の拳銃を確かめる。ホームズは玄関を閉めるよう叫び、三人は急いで階段を駆け下りる。

"He's gone for the dog!" cried Miss Hunter.「犬を放しに行ったのです」とハンターさんは叫んだ。
"I have my revolver," said I.「私には拳銃がある」と私は言った。
"Better close the front door," cried Holmes, and we all rushed down the stairs together.「玄関の扉を閉めたほうがよい」とホームズが叫び、私たちは全員で階段を駆け下りた。
