名刺には水力技師ヴィクター・ハザリーの名がある。ワトソンが長い夜の旅をねぎらうと、青年は単調ではなかったと言い、不意に激しく笑い始める。それは楽しさから出た笑いではない。医師は水とブランデーを差し出し、落ち着かせようとする。

"Oh, my night could not be called monotonous," said he, and laughed.「ああ、私の夜を単調とは呼べませんよ」と彼は言って笑った。
He laughed very heartily, with a high, ringing note, leaning back in his chair and shaking his sides.甲高く響く声で盛大に笑い、椅子にのけぞって体を震わせた。
