警告に従うよりも、ハザリー氏は高い報酬と機械への興味を選ぶ。そこへスターク大佐が、顎ひげのある小柄で太った男を連れて戻る。男はファーガスンという秘書兼支配人だと紹介される。大佐は開いている扉に気づき、疑い深く理由を問う。
