ハザリー氏は高い窓から庭へ落ち、茂みへ逃げ込もうとする。背後では追っ手が迫り、女性の声が響く。地面に降りた青年は、まだ屋敷の危険から逃れ切っていないと悟る。月明かりの庭を走り、できるだけ遠くへ離れようとする。

"I was shaken but not hurt by the fall; so I picked myself up and rushed off among the bushes as hard as I could run, for I understood that I was far from being out of danger yet.「落下で体は揺さぶられたもののけがはなく、まだ危険を脱していないと分かっていたので、起き上がって茂みの中を全力で走りました。
