ホームズは、ワトソンの結論の大部分が誤りだったと明かす。田舎の開業医でよく歩くという点は認めるが、誤った推論を追うことが自分の考えを刺激したのだと説明する。
表現・文法のポイント
- Has anything escaped me?
- 尋ねているのはワトソン。escapeは逃げ出すという意味から、「自分の注意を逃れる」、つまり見落とすことを表す。直後のoverlookedも同じ問題を言い換えている。
- Not that you are entirely wrong
- 「だからといって、まったく間違っているわけではない」と、直前の厳しい批評を限定する言い方。notだけを拾って、全体の推理が正しかったと逆転させない。

"Interesting, though elementary," said he as he returned to his favourite corner of the settee. "There are certainly one or two indications upon the stick. It gives us the basis for several deductions."
