二通の電報を読んだあとも、ホームズは朝の馬車に関わる問い合わせの返事を待っている。ベイカー街に呼び鈴が鳴り、室内の二人は扉へ注意を向ける。紙の知らせが続いた一日の終わりに、今度は直接話をするための客が訪ねてこようとしている。

The ring at the bell proved to be something even more satisfactory than an answer, however, for the door opened and a rough-looking fellow entered who was evidently the man himself.だが、その呼び鈴がもたらしたのは、返事よりさらに満足なものだった。戸が開くと、いかにも御者本人らしい、粗野な風貌の男が入ってきたのだ。
