ホームズは、相手に一本取られたと剣の勝負にたとえて笑う。御者は、朝に雇われてホテルへ行き、二人の紳士の馬車を追った経緯を語る。

"A touch, Watson—an undeniable touch!" said he. "I feel a foil as quick and supple as my own. He got home upon me very prettily that time. So his name was Sherlock Holmes, was it?"
「一本取られた、ワトソン。これは文句なく一本だ」と彼は言った。「私の剣と同じくらい素早くしなやかな剣を感じる。今度は、実に鮮やかに突きを決められた。それで、名前はシャーロック・ホームズだったのですね？」
"Yes, sir, that was the gentleman's name."

I was glad enough to agree. First we drove down to the Northumberland Hotel and waited there until two gentlemen came out and took a cab from the rank. We followed their cab until it pulled up somewhere near here."
