木々に囲まれた車道を通り、ワトソンたちの前に館の建物が近づいている。荒れ地を越えてきた長い移動は、ようやく玄関で一区切りになる。どのような家で、誰が迎えるのか。薄れていく日の光の中、初めて泊まる場所の姿を三人は見ようとしている。

The avenue opened into a broad expanse of turf, and the house lay before us.並木の車道は広い芝生へ開け、館が目の前に現れた。
In the fading light I could see that the centre was a heavy block of building from which a porch projected.薄れる光の中、中央は玄関の張り出した重厚な建物の塊だと分かった。
