近隣の住人として、ステイプルトンはヘンリー卿が館へ来たことを話題にしている。そこには、前の主人の死と、土地に伝わる物語についての関心もある。ワトソンは新しい知人の説明を聞きながら、荒れ地で暮らす人がどのように出来事を見ているのかを確かめようとする。
