虫を追っていたステイプルトンが戻り、小道には三人がそろっている。妹がワトソンに何を話していたかを、兄はまだ知らない。まずは荒れ地の花や、先ほどの追跡についての言葉が交わされる。紹介の済んでいない部分を確かめる会話へ進もうとしている。
