通りで見つけた馬車は、ホームズたちの前から走り去っている。短い追跡を終えた二人には、車内の人物について分からないことが残る。なぜあの馬車に注意を向けていたのか。ワトソンは友人の反応を見ながら、さきほどの行動の理由を聞こうとしている。
