日が傾くころ、ワトソンは丘の頂へたどり着く。広い荒れ地には静けさがあり、先ほど見た人の姿は近くにない。見渡せる地形から、次に確かめる場所を探す。町や館で人と話していた時間とは違い、いまは、一人で地形を読みながら進まなければならない。
