一行はメリピット荘へ入り、中の部屋を確かめ始める。誰が残り、どこにいるのだろうか。廊下や階段を進みながら、人の気配と物音を探そうとしている。外から見ていた窓だけでなく、家の内側で確かめられる場所へ、一行の調査は進んでいる。

The front door was open, so we rushed in and hurried from room to room to the amazement of a doddering old manservant, who met us in the passage.正面玄関の戸は開いていた。そこで私たちは飛び込み、廊下で出会ったよぼよぼの老使用人を驚かせながら、部屋から部屋へ急いだ。
There was no light save in the dining-room, but Holmes caught up the lamp and left no corner of the house unexplored.食堂以外に灯りはなかったが、ホームズはランプをつかみ、家のどの角も探さずには残さなかった。
