夕食のあと、ワトソンは書庫でコーヒーを受け取る。運んできたバリモアに、荒れ地の様子を尋ねる機会だ。ほかの人々が別の部屋にいる間、二人は話し始める。書庫は館のほかの人々のいる部屋から離れており、ワトソンには、落ち着いて質問できる場所でもある。

Mortimer had stayed to dinner, and he and the baronet played écarté afterwards.モーティマー医師は夕食まで残り、そのあと準男爵とエカルテをしていた。
The butler brought me my coffee into the library, and I took the chance to ask him a few questions.執事が図書室へコーヒーを運んで来たので、その機会にいくつか尋ねた。
