赤毛だったらなあと嘆くスポールディングに、ウィルソンはわけを尋ねる。助手によれば、赤毛組合という団体にまた空きが出たのだという。空きの数が希望者より多く、管財人たちは金の使い道に困っているらしい。出不精で世間の噂にうといウィルソンは、この思わぬ話に耳を傾ける。
