この場面の解説
スポールディングは、赤毛組合にまた空きが出たと話す。空きが多すぎて、管財人は金の使い道に困っているほどだという。めったに外出せず世間にうといウィルソンは、ちょっとした噂話にも飢えていた。
表現・文法のポイント
- at their wits' end
- be at one's wits' end は「途方に暮れる、万策尽きる」。wits は「知恵、才覚」で、それが尽きた所にいる、というイメージ。後ろの what to do with the money が、何に困っているのかを示している。
- a nice little crib
- crib はもともと「まぐさ桶、小屋」だが、当時の俗語で「楽な勤め口、職」の意味があった。nice little ～ は「ちょっとした、なかなかいい～」と、ありがたみを込めた言い方。step into は「（地位に）すんなり就く」。
- my business came to me instead of my having to go to it
- 質屋は客のほうが品物を持って店に来る商売なので、自分から出かける必要がない、ということ。my having to go は、動名詞の前に所有格を置いて「私が～しなければならないこと」と主語を示す形だ。
- weeks on end
- on end は「続けて、ぶっ通しで」。weeks on end で「何週間も続けて」。days on end、hours on end のようにも使う。玄関マットの外へ一歩も出ない、という誇張と合わせて、出不精ぶりを強調している。

- 管財人（trustees）
- 遺産や基金を預かり、遺言や規約に従って運用・分配する人。当時のイギリスでは、遺言で信託を作り、風変わりな条件をつけて財産を配る例も珍しくなかった。

"'Why,' says he, 'here's another vacancy on the League of the Red-headed Men. It's worth quite a little fortune to any man who gets it, and I understand that there are more vacancies than there are men, so that the trustees are at their wits' end what to do with the money. If my hair would only change colour, here's a nice little crib all ready for me to step into.'

"'Why, what is it, then?' I asked. You see, Mr. Holmes, I am a very stay-at-home man, and as my business came to me instead of my having to go to it, I was often weeks on end without putting my foot over the door-mat. In that way I didn't know much of what was going on outside, and I was always glad of a bit of news.
