赤毛組合を知らないと聞いて、スポールディングは目を丸くする。ウィルソン自身にも応募の資格があるというのだ。報酬は年に二百ポンドほどで、仕事は軽く、本業の邪魔にもならないらしい。ここ数年、商売が振るわなかったウィルソンは思わず耳をそばだて、詳しく話してくれと頼む。
