スポールディングは広告を見せながら、赤毛組合のいわれを語る。組合を作ったのは、自身も赤毛だったアメリカの百万長者だという。彼は莫大な遺産を管財人に託し、その利息で赤毛の男たちに楽な勤め口を与えるよう言い残した。だがそれでは応募者が殺到するはずだと、ウィルソンは首をかしげる。
