スポールディングによれば、組合に入れるのはロンドンの大人の男で、しかも燃えるような真っ赤な髪の者だけだという。髪の色には自信のあるウィルソンは、助手に店を閉めさせ、すぐに広告の宛先へ向かった。
表現・文法のポイント
- do the old town a good turn
- do A a good turn は「A に親切にする、A のためになることをする」。the old town は「懐かしい町」くらいの親しみを込めた言い方で、ここでは若いころ過ごしたロンドンのこと。
- it is no use your applying
- It is no use ～ing は「～しても無駄だ」。your は動名詞 applying の意味上の主語で、「あなたが応募しても」。後ろの anything but ～ は「～以外なら何でも」で、本物の赤以外はだめだ、という条件を表している。
- worth your while
- be worth one's while は「（時間や手間をかける）価値がある」。hardly がついて「ほとんど割に合わない」。put yourself out of the way は「わざわざ手間をかける」。わざと控えめに言って、相手をその気にさせる話し方だ。
- put up the shutters
- 「（店の）雨戸を閉める」、つまりその日の店じまいをすること。当時の商店は、夜や休業日に木の雨戸（shutters）を窓にはめて閉めた。for the day は「その日一日は」。

- 当時のイギリスでは、赤毛はからかいの的になりやすく、アイルランドやスコットランドの血筋と結びつけて見られることもあった。それだけに「赤毛であることが得になる」という話は、いっそう奇妙に聞こえた。

"'Not so many as you might think,' he answered. 'You see it is really confined to Londoners, and to grown men. This American had started from London when he was young, and he wanted to do the old town a good turn. Then, again, I have heard it is no use your applying if your hair is light red, or dark red, or anything but real bright, blazing, fiery red. Now, if you cared to apply, Mr. Wilson, you would just walk in; but perhaps it would hardly be worth your while to put yourself out of the way for the sake of a few hundred pounds.'

Vincent Spaulding seemed to know so much about it that I thought he might prove useful, so I just ordered him to put up the shutters for the day and to come right away with me.
