四月のある朝、ホームズが身支度を整えてワトソンを起こしに来る。ひどく興奮した若い女性が訪ねてきて居間で待っており、こんな時刻に来るからにはよほど切迫した用件だろう、とホームズは言う。ワトソンは喜んで同行に応じる。
表現・文法のポイント
- Very sorry to knock you up
- knock up は英国英語で「ドアをたたいて人を起こす」。ここは、たたき起こしてすまない、という意味。米国英語ではまったく別の意味になるので注意。Very sorry は I am very sorry の省略で、くだけた言い方だ。
- as a rule
- as a rule は「たいてい、概して」。例外はあるが普通は、という含みの挿入句。ホームズが普段は朝寝坊だと述べ、早起きの今朝がいつもと違う異例の日だと際立たせている。
- Should it prove to be an interesting case
- If it should prove to be 〜 の if を省き、Should を文頭に出した倒置の条件文。「もし〜だと分かったら」と、可能性を低めに見た仮定を表す。prove to be 〜 は「結果として〜だと分かる」。
- I would not miss it for anything
- miss は「逃す」。否定文の for anything は「何があっても〜ない」。would not と合わせて、絶対に逃したくないという強い意志を、親しい友人同士のくだけた調子で表している。

- ベイカー街の下宿の大家で、ホームズとワトソンの暮らしを世話している。ホームズの冗談では、依頼人に起こされた夫人がホームズを、ホームズがワトソンを起こすという、起こし起こされる連鎖になっている。

It was early in April in the year '83 that I woke one morning to find Sherlock Holmes standing, fully dressed, by the side of my bed. He was a late riser, as a rule, and as the clock on the mantelpiece showed me that it was only a quarter-past seven, I blinked up at him in some surprise, and perhaps just a little resentment, for I was myself regular in my habits.

"Very sorry to knock you up, Watson," said he, "but it's the common lot this morning. Mrs. Hudson has been knocked up, she retorted upon me, and I on you."

Now, when young ladies wander about the metropolis at this hour of the morning, and knock sleepy people up out of their beds, I presume that it is something very pressing which they have to communicate. Should it prove to be an interesting case, you would, I am sure, wish to follow it from the outset. I thought, at any rate, that I should call you and give you the chance."
