表現・文法のポイント
- in no less than seven places
- no less than 〜 は「〜も」と数の多さを強調する言い方で、予想以上に多いことを示す。not less than（少なくとも〜）と区別すること。ここは「七か所も」、泥の跳ねの多さをホームズが指摘している。
- There is no vehicle save a dog-cart
- save は前置詞で「〜を除いて」（= except）。やや文語的な言い方。「ドッグカート以外に乗り物はない」。続く then only when 〜 は「しかも〜のときに限って」と条件をさらに絞る。
- I can stand this strain no longer
- stand は「耐える」、no longer は「もはや〜ない」（= not 〜 any longer）。no longer を文末に置くと、切迫した気持ちが強まる。strain は「張りつめた緊張、重圧」を指す名詞だ。

The lady gave a violent start and stared in bewilderment at my companion.

At present it is out of my power to reward you for your services, but in a month or six weeks I shall be married, with the control of my own income, and then at least you shall not find me ungrateful."
