ホームズは細部を正確に話すようヘレンに求める。ヘレンは、屋敷では片側の棟だけが使われ、その一階に博士、姉、自分の三つの寝室が並び、どれも同じ廊下に面していると説明する。運命の夜、博士の葉巻の匂いを避けて姉は妹の部屋へ来て、結婚の話をし、十一時に戸口で立ち止まった。
表現・文法のポイント
- with his eyes closed and his head sunk in a cushion
- with ＋ 名詞 ＋ 過去分詞・形容詞は付帯状況で、「～した状態で」の意味。ここでは「目を閉じ、頭をクッションに沈めて」。ホームズが考えごとにふけっている姿が、二つの描写で重ねて示される。
- Pray be precise as to details
- pray は please より古風で改まった「どうか」。as to ～ は「～に関して」で、about に近い。「細部については正確に」と、依頼人にていねいに、しかし念を押すように求める台詞だ。
- Do I make myself plain?
- make oneself plain は「自分の言うことを分からせる」で、make oneself understood に近い。ここの plain は「はっきりした、明白な」の意味。間取りの説明が伝わっているか確かめている。
- which it was his custom to smoke
- it was his custom to smoke は「それを吸うのが彼の習慣だった」で、it は後ろの to 不定詞を指す形式主語。which は cigars を受ける関係代名詞で、his custom to smoke の目的語になっている。

- もとは領主が荘園を治めた館。この物語では、一部しか使われないほど古く大きな屋敷として描かれる。寝室が一階に並び、窓が芝生に直接面するのも、古い造りゆえである。

Sherlock Holmes had been leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed and his head sunk in a cushion, but he half opened his lids now and glanced across at his visitor.

At eleven o'clock she rose to leave me, but she paused at the door and looked back.
