戸を閉めろと言われても、ロイロット博士は引き下がらない。言いたいことを言ってから出ていくと言い放ち、ホームズに警告を浴びせる。そして暖炉の火かき棒に目をやり、力を見せつけようと一歩踏み出す。ホームズは動じず、その動きを静かに見守る。

He stepped swiftly forward, seized the poker, and bent it into a curve with his huge brown hands.彼は素早く前へ出て火かき棒をつかみ、褐色の大きな手で弓なりに曲げた。
