ホームズは、警察の探偵と取り違えられたことに呆れつつ、この出来事は調査に興を添えると語り、依頼人の身を案じる。朝食のあとドクターズ・コモンズへ資料を探しに出かけ、一時近くに、走り書きの青い紙を持って戻る。
表現・文法のポイント
- Fancy his having the insolence to confound me with
- Fancy ～ing は「～だなんて、驚いた」という感嘆の言い方。his は動名詞 having の意味上の主語。confound A with B は「A を B と取り違える」。
- gives zest to our investigation
- zest は料理に加える薬味のような「ぴりっとした面白味」。give zest to ～ で「～に興を添える」。危険な脅しさえ、ホームズには推理を面白くする刺激になる。
- where I hope to get some data which may help us in this matter
- where は直前の Doctors' Commons を先行詞とする関係副詞。data は本来 datum の複数形で、「資料、情報」。which may help us は data を修飾している。
- scrawled over with notes and figures
- scrawl は「走り書きする」。scrawled over with ～ は「～でびっしり走り書きされた」。notes and figures「メモと数字」から、ホームズの一人きりの計算の跡が見てとれる。

- ドクターズ・コモンズ（Doctors' Commons）
- ロンドンにあった、かつて遺言を扱った機関の名。物語の時代にはすでに業務はほかへ移っていたが、作中では旧称で呼ばれている。ホームズは母の遺言の中身を確かめに向かった。

"Fancy his having the insolence to confound me with the official detective force! This incident gives zest to our investigation, however, and I only trust that our little friend will not suffer from her imprudence in allowing this brute to trace her. And now, Watson, we shall order breakfast, and afterwards I shall walk down to Doctors' Commons, where I hope to get some data which may help us in this matter."
