端の壁に修理は不要で、あれは自分を部屋から移すための口実だったとストーナーさんは言う。ホームズは廊下の窓が狭すぎて人が通れないこと、姉妹が夜に戸に鍵をかけていたことを確かめ、鎧戸にかんぬきをかけてほしいと頼む。
表現・文法のポイント
- it was an excuse to move me from my room
- excuse は名詞で「口実」（発音は〔イクスキュース〕）。to move 以下が excuse を修飾して「〜するための口実」となる。I believe that 〜 で自分の推測だと断りを入れている。
- Ah! that is suggestive.
- suggestive は「暗示的な、何かを思わせる」。ホームズが手がかりの気配を感じたときの反応で、「ほう、それは意味ありげだ」という調子。Ah! は「ほう」と気づいたときの声だ。
- Too narrow for anyone to pass through.
- too 〜 for A to ... は「A が…するには〜すぎる」。for anyone が to pass through の意味上の主語。「誰も通り抜けられないほど狭い」ということを、短く言い切っている。
- would you have the kindness to go into your room
- Would you have the kindness to 〜? は「恐れ入りますが〜していただけませんか」。Would you 〜? より改まった丁寧な依頼の形。続く bar は動詞で「かんぬきをかける」。
