この場面の解説
ワトソンは、ホームズが危険と言うからには屋敷で自分より多くを見たのだろうと言う。自分には呼び鈴の紐のほか変わったものは見えず、通風口も珍しくないと答える。ホームズは、ストーク・モランへ来る前から通風口があると分かっていたと言い、ワトソンを驚かせる。
表現・文法のポイント
- I fancy that I may have deduced a little more
- fancy は「～と思う、想像する」で、think より軽くひかえめな言い方。may have deduced は「推理したかもしれない」。deduce は集めた事実から論理的に結論を導くことで、ホームズの得意技を表す語だ。
- save the bell-rope
- この save は「～を除いて」という前置詞で、except と同じ意味。bell-rope は呼び鈴の紐のこと。ワトソンは、変わったものは紐くらいだったと言うだけで、まだその意味が分からないでいる。
- what purpose that could answer I confess is more than I can imagine
- answer a purpose は「目的にかなう、役に立つ」。what purpose that could answer が文の主語で、I confess が挿入されている。is more than I can imagine は「想像を超えている」。
- before ever we came to Stoke Moran
- before ever ～ は「～するよりも前から」で、ever が before を強める。先に結論の事実だけを挙げて相手を驚かせる言い方。ワトソンの My dear Holmes! には、驚きとあきれが混じる。
