九時に屋敷の明かりが消え、二人は暗い部屋で待ち続ける。十一時ちょうど、真ん中の窓にひとつ明かりがともり、ホームズが合図だと言って立ち上がる。二人は宿を出て、暗い夜道を屋敷へ向かう。出がけに、ホームズは宿の主人にひとこと断りを入れる。

About nine o'clock the light among the trees was extinguished, and all was dark in the direction of the Manor House.九時ごろ、木々の間の明かりが消え、領主館の方角はすべて暗くなった。
Two hours passed slowly away, and then, suddenly, just at the stroke of eleven, a single bright light shone out right in front of us.二時間がゆっくりと過ぎ、やがて突然、ちょうど十一時の鐘が打つころ、ひとつの明るい光が真正面にぱっと現れた。
