表現・文法のポイント
- Hitherto
- それまで、これまでという時間の区切りを表す副詞。ここでは、今回とは違って以前の外出は一日以内だったという対比を導く。続くBut nowとの関係で、帰らない期間が長くなった不安が分かる。

- 実行方法を教えてほしいという単純な質問ではなく、彼女にそんなことはできないという困難さを示す問いである。若く気の弱い女性が危険な店へ入る状況を、ワトソンの地の文から捉えている。
