月曜日、セントクレア氏はいつもより早くロンドンへ出た。同じ日に夫人も荷物を受け取りに出かけ、夕方にはスワンダム横丁を歩いていた。ホームズはここまでの道筋をワトソンに確かめる。店で荷物を受け取った夫人は、駅へ戻ろうとしているところである。

"If you remember, Monday was an exceedingly hot day, and Mrs. St. Clair walked slowly, glancing about in the hope of seeing a cab, as she did not like the neighbourhood in which she found herself.「覚えているだろうが、月曜日はひどく暑かった。夫人はその辺りが気に入らず、馬車が見つからないかと周りを見ながら、ゆっくり歩いていた。
