馬車はリーの近くまで来て、木々の間にセントクレア家の灯りが見える。ホームズは捜査のため、夫人から部屋を借りているという。夫について良い知らせを持ち帰れないことを気にしつつ、二人は家へ向かう。夜更けまで待つ夫人と、これから顔を合わせるところである。

We had pulled up in front of a large villa which stood within its own grounds.馬車は、広い敷地に建つ大きな屋敷の前に止まった。
