扉越しにブーンを見たホームズは、持参した鞄から大きなスポンジを取り出す。警部はその用意を面白がり、ホームズは独房を静かに開けてほしいと頼む。中の男はまだ深く眠っている。ワトソンは友人の意図をつかめないまま、そのやり取りを見守っている。

"Well, I don't know why not," said the inspector.「まあ、断る理由もありませんね」と警部は言った。
"He doesn't look a credit to the Bow Street cells, does he?"「ボウ街の独房の名を上げるような姿ではありませんからね」
He slipped his key into the lock, and we all very quietly entered the cell.警部が鍵穴へ鍵を差し、私たちは皆、実に静かに独房へ入った。
