Notes Scene 57: In the Brougham

Notes on this scene

Holmes tells the King that Adler married an English lawyer named Norton the previous day. The King doubts she can love her husband. Holmes hopes that she does, reasoning that love for Norton would remove her attachment to the King and her motive for disrupting his proposed marriage alliance.

はずがない expresses the speaker’s firm belief that something is impossible. The King cannot accept that Adler loves Norton.
Verb て-form + ほしい expresses a wish for another person to act or remain in a state. Holmes hopes she loves her husband.
ことになる can present a logical consequence: “that means.” Holmes works through the consequences of Adler’s new attachment.

Background

The lawyer Norton
Earlier Norton was identified with the Inner Temple, one of the Inns of Court to which barristers belonged. Here the general word lawyer groups that professional role under a broader term.
Holmes’s reasoning
If Adler loves her husband, Holmes reasons, she no longer has a motive to trouble her former lover. His cool focus on the client’s interests, without regard for the King’s lingering feelings, is characteristic.

Full text: original English and Japanese translation

"Irene Adler is married," remarked Holmes.

"Married! When?"

"Yesterday."

"But to whom?"

"To an English lawyer named Norton."

"But she could not love him."

"I am in hopes that she does."

"And why in hopes?"

"Because it would spare your Majesty all fear of future annoyance. If the lady loves her husband, she does not love your Majesty. If she does not love your Majesty, there is no reason why she should interfere with your Majesty's plan."

Next scene: The Woman on the Steps

Although he accepts Holmes’s reasoning, the King falls into a gloomy silence. The carriage eventually reaches Briony Lodge on Serpentine Avenue. The front door is open, and an older woman is standing on the steps. She seems to have been expecting the visitors and greets Holmes by name as they arrive.
