Notes Scene 22: Pressing Further

Notes on this scene

Holmes says James's innocence is very probable, and Alice challenges Lestrade with this encouragement. Lestrade thinks Holmes has reached a conclusion too quickly. Alice remains certain and suggests that James refused to explain the quarrel because it concerned her. Holmes asks her to clarify what she means by that involvement.

ご覧 is a respectful expression for looking, but なさい gives a firm instruction. Here Alice effectively says ‘There, you see!’ Her pointed tone contrasts with the formally polite wording.
‘Unfortunately’ or ‘I regret to say.’ ながら can express a contrast with a feeling or state, not only simultaneous actions. Lestrade uses this conventional phrase before disagreeing with Holmes.
The volitional form 話そう followed by とする refers to an intention or attempt. In the negative past, it means James would not try or agree to speak about the matter.

"I think that it is very probable."

"There, now!" she cried, throwing back her head and looking defiantly at Lestrade. "You hear! He gives me hopes."

Lestrade shrugged his shoulders. "I am afraid that my colleague has been a little quick in forming his conclusions," he said.

"But he is right. Oh! I know that he is right. James never did it. And about his quarrel with his father, I am sure that the reason why he would not speak about it to the coroner was because I was concerned in it."

"In what way?" asked Holmes.

Next scene: A Daughter's Hesitation

Alice tries to speak openly about what James and his father had been arguing over. Yet her words become hesitant as she describes the young man she has known since childhood. Holmes does not hurry her, allowing her to choose what to say. How much does she know about the reason for their quarrel beside the pool?
