Notes Scene 26: Plans for the Evening

Notes on this scene

Lestrade's permission covers only himself and Holmes. Holmes changes his earlier decision about going out and asks whether they can still reach Hereford by train in time to visit James that night. Reassured that they can, he decides to go and tells Watson that the absence should last only about two hours.

Japanese in this scene

きみと私わたしの分ぶんだけ
分 is read ぶん when it means a person's share or allocation. With だけ, the phrase limits the permission to the two named people. It is not the minute counter.
考かんがえ直なおそう
Verb stem + 直す means to do something again or revise it. In the volitional, 直す becomes 直そう, so 考え直そう means ‘let me reconsider.’ Holmes revises his earlier decision about going out.
ほんの二に時間じかんほど
ほんの minimizes the amount: ‘only’ or ‘a mere.’ ほど makes it approximate. Together they reassure Watson that the two men's absence will be relatively short.

Next scene: Thoughts at the Hotel

After seeing Holmes and Lestrade to the station, Watson walks around the town and returns to the inn. The novel he picks up belongs to a world quite different from the case before them. Even as he rests on the sofa, his thoughts return to the pool and to what could have happened if the young man's account is true.
