ルーカッスルが犬を放しに行ったと気づき、一同は玄関へ急ぐ。飢えた犬の吠え声と悲鳴が響く中、酔いの残るトラーが現れ、二日間餌を与えていないと警告する。
表現・文法のポイント
- hardly reached
- hardly ... whenで「〜するかしないうちに」。階下へ着く直前に襲撃が始まった急迫を表す。
- or it'll be too late
- orは命令に続いて「さもないと」。救助の猶予がほとんどないことをトラーが叫んでいる。

"He's gone for the dog!" cried Miss Hunter.
「犬を放しに行ったのです」とハンターさんは叫んだ。
"I have my revolver," said I.
「私には拳銃がある」と私は言った。
"Better close the front door," cried Holmes, and we all rushed down the stairs together. We had hardly reached the hall when we heard the baying of a hound, and then a scream of agony, with a horrible worrying sound which it was dreadful to listen to. An elderly man with a red face and shaking limbs came staggering out at a side door.
「玄関の扉を閉めたほうがよい」とホームズが叫び、私たちは全員で階段を駆け下りた。玄関ホールへ着くか着かないうちに、猟犬の吠える声が聞こえ、続いて苦痛の叫びと、耳を塞ぎたくなるような恐ろしい噛み裂く音が響いた。赤ら顔で手足を震わせる年配の男が、脇の扉からよろめき出てきた。
"My God!" he cried. "Someone has loosed the dog. It's not been fed for two days. Quick, quick, or it'll be too late!"
「何ということだ」と彼は叫んだ。「誰かが犬を放した。二日間、餌をもらっていないんだ。早く、早くしないと手遅れになる」
