ホームズは、友人が医師に贈り物をする機会を考えるよう促す。病院を辞めて田舎で開業した転機の贈り物ではないかと、推論を組み立てる。
表現・文法のポイント
- a pledge of their good will
- pledgeはここでは友人の好意を形にしたしるし。契約上の担保と取らず、贈り物が何を表すかを読めばよい。
- stretching our inference too far
- stretchは伸ばすことから、推論を根拠以上に広げること。ホームズの問いは、無理な飛躍ではなく妥当な推論だろう、とワトソンに確認している。

We know there has been a presentation. We believe there has been a change from a town hospital to a country practice. Is it, then, stretching our inference too far to say that the presentation was on the occasion of the change?"
