解説　場面 38「門の周りで」

この場面の解説

足跡は小門と同じ側の道の縁にあった。小門には南京錠がかかっていたが、高さからすれば人が乗り越えられると確認される。

on the same side as: 「〜と同じ側に」。足跡と小門の位置関係を指定する表現で、道の縁という補足と合わせて読む。
could have got over it: 過去分詞を伴い、当時それを乗り越えることが可能だったと述べる。実際に誰かが乗り越えたと確認されたわけではない。

"Were they on the same side of the path as the moor-gate?"

「道の、荒れ地への小門と同じ側でしたか」

"Yes; they were on the edge of the path on the same side as the moor-gate."

「はい、小門と同じ側の、道の縁でした」

"You interest me exceedingly. Another point. Was the wicket-gate closed?"

「実に興味深い。もう一点。小門は閉まっていましたか？」

"Closed and padlocked."

「閉まっていて、南京錠がかかっていました」

"How high was it?"

「高さはどれくらいです」

"About four feet high."

「四フィートほどです」

"Then anyone could have got over it?"

「では、誰でも乗り越えられますね？」

"Yes."

「ええ」

"And what marks did you see by the wicket-gate?"

「小門のそばでは、どんな跡を見ましたか」

"None in particular."

小門の状態について尋ねたホームズは、その周りの地面を誰が調べたのかへ話を進める。モーティマーには、チャールズ卿がそこで過ごした時間についても説明できることがある。聞き取りは、短い立ち止まりをどの観察から考えたのかという問いへ向かう。
