この場面の解説

ホームズはサー・ヘンリーに最終作戦の指示を与え始める。今夜、ステイプルトン家の夕食へ行く予定を確認する。

planning a battle with his chief of the staff: ホームズとワトソンを、戦いを指揮する将軍と参謀長に例える。
engaged, as I understand, to dine: ここのengagedは婚約ではなく、夕食の約束があるという意味だ。

"To see Sir Henry. Ah, here he is!"

「サー・ヘンリーに会うことだ。ああ、ちょうど来た」

"Good-morning, Holmes," said the baronet. "You look like a general who is planning a battle with his chief of the staff."

「おはよう、ホームズ」とサー・ヘンリーは言った。「参謀長と戦いの作戦を練っている将軍みたいだな」

"That is the exact situation. Watson was asking for orders."

「まさにそのとおりです。ワトソンが指示を尋ねていたところです」

"And so do I."

「私も同じだ」

"Very good. You are engaged, as I understand, to dine with our friends the Stapletons tonight."

「結構。今夜はご友人のステイプルトン家で夕食を召し上がる約束でしたね」

"I hope that you will come also. They are very hospitable people, and I am sure that they would be very glad to see you."

「あなたも一緒に来てくれるといいんだが。その人たちはとてももてなし好きだし、あなたに会えばきっと大喜びすると思う」

ヘンリー卿の招きについて話す中で、ホームズは自分たちの予定を伝えようとしている。相手にはまだ聞いていない話がある。朝の会話は、別行動の相談へ進むところだ。皆が同じ所へ向かうとは限らず、別々に動くなら、それぞれの役目を伝えておくことが大切だ。
