義父の暮らしぶりを語り終えたヘレンは、いよいよ本題に入る。閉ざされた屋敷で姉ジュリアと過ごした日々、叔母の家で出会った相手との婚約。ホームズに姉のことを問われ、彼女は二年前に起きた出来事を語りはじめる。
