孤独な暮らしの中で、姉ジュリアとヘレンは使用人もなく家事をこなし、姉は三十歳で髪が白くなりはじめていた。姉が亡くなったのはちょうど二年前だとヘレンは言う。ジュリアは叔母の家で海兵隊の少佐と出会って婚約し、義父も反対しなかったが、結婚式の約二週間前にあの出来事が起きた。
表現・文法のポイント
- had no great pleasure in our lives
- no great pleasure は「たいした楽しみもない」と控えめに言う形で、実際は「ほとんど楽しみがなかった」。強い言葉を避けて痛みを伝える、英語らしい婉曲表現だ。
- even as mine has
- even as は「ちょうど～のように」。mine は my hair のことで、has の後ろには begun to whiten が省略されている。姉と同じく若くして髪が白くなったと、静かに語っている。
- we were little likely to see anyone of our own age and position
- little は否定の意味をもつ副詞で、little likely は「ほとんど～しそうにない」。of our own age and position は「私たちと同じ年ごろと身分の」の意味で、anyone を後ろから修飾している。
- within a fortnight of the day which had been fixed for the wedding
- within a fortnight of ～ は「～から二週間以内に」。fortnight は two weeks を指す、イギリス英語らしい語。fix は日取りを「決める」の意味で、過去完了にして、予定が先に決まっていたと示す。

- 現役を退いたり任務がなくなったりした将校に、給与の半分ほどが支払われる制度。half-pay major は、現役ではないが軍籍を残す少佐を指し、中流の紳士という印象を与える。

My stepfather learned of the engagement when my sister returned and offered no objection to the marriage; but within a fortnight of the day which had been fixed for the wedding, the terrible event occurred which has deprived me of my only companion."
