口笛の話を終えた姉妹は、軽く言葉を交わして別れる。姉は戸を閉め、鍵を回す。ここでホームズが口をはさみ、姉妹がいつも鍵をかけて眠っていたのかと尋ねる。ヘレンは、その理由を義父の飼う動物に結びつけて答える。
