ホームズに意見を求められ、ワトソンは普通の鞭だが結んである理由はわからないと答える。ホームズは、頭のよい男が知恵を犯罪に向けるのは最悪だと嘆き、一同は芝生に出る。ワトソンは友人の険しい顔を見て、彼が物思いから覚めるのを待った。

- make of 〜 は「〜をどう解釈する」。What do you make of 〜? で「〜をどう思う？」と意見や判断を求める定型表現。ホームズがワトソンに謎解きの感想を聞く場面でよく出てくる。
- a common enough lash
- enough は形容詞の後ろに置いて「十分に〜」の意味を足す語で、a common enough lash は「ごくありふれた鞭」。ここでは「ただの鞭だ」と、見たまま素直に答えるワトソンの返事になっている。
- Ah, me! it's a wicked world
