指示を聞き終えたストーナーさんは、ホームズがもう答えを出していると感じ、姉の死因を教えてほしいと頼む。ホームズは証拠が足りないと言って慎重に答えるが、ロイロット博士が戻る前に彼女を励まして別れる。二人はまもなく屋敷を離れる。
